Job Description
This is a Level 3 AAT Apprenticeship role - split 80/20 between working and learning with the employer gaining valuable hands on skills, and learning & gaining qualifications with Solveway Apprenticeships!
The role will provide the opportunity for someone who has a genuine interest in accountancy to start their career. It will enable you to develop your accountancy and taxation knowledge and experience working within an accountancy practice.
The role will be varied and you will be provided 'on-the-job' training to support your AAT apprenticeship studies. Are you looking to build a long-term career in finance and administration?
What you will be doing:
Working at Spry Pay (Chalmers & Co) posting purchase, and sales invoices, bank statements to accounting software, assisting Accounts Manager in managing and sorting out client’s data, preparing VAT returns, sorting out supplier invoices. Managing client documents in and out and from branches, scanning/organising on CRM, Answering Telephone calls and taking messages.
Main Responsibilities
- Prepare weekly and monthly payrolls for a range of clients
- Communicate with clients to ensure payroll information is received on time
- Handle payroll queries and issue/upload payroll reports
- Notify clients of PAYE liabilities due
- Send pension letters, process opt‑outs, and manage pension re‑declarations
- Set up and close payroll schemes with HMRC
- Resolve discrepancies between payroll submissions and HMRC
- Process payrolls mainly on Nomi, with some on Sage
- Bookkeeping for allocated clients
- Prepare and submit VAT returns
- Prepare accounts to Trial Balance stage for review
- Assist with year‑end accounts work
- Support clients with accounting software queries
Working Hours & Salary
37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday 9am-5pm
£15,600 per annum for the first year, rising to the National Minimum Wage thereafter.

Qualifications
- AAT Level 2 or 3
- GCSE English and Maths A*-C/4-9 or level 2 equivalents
