About the role
This is a highly influential advisory and stakeholder engagement role within the Electoral Commission's Electoral Administration and Regulation Directorate.
As a Senior Regional Adviser, you will work directly with Returning Officers, Electoral Registration Officers, Electoral Services Managers and senior local authority stakeholders across your assigned region. Acting as a trusted adviser, you will support the delivery of well-run elections and effective electoral registration services through expert guidance, performance monitoring and collaborative improvement activity.
You will use performance information and sector intelligence to identify risks, opportunities and emerging trends. Through effective stakeholder engagement, you will influence improvements in electoral administration, promote good practice and support the consistent application of electoral law and Commission guidance.
This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to strengthening democracy across England while building extensive networks across the electoral sector and developing specialist expertise in electoral law, regulation and performance improvement.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert advice and guidance on electoral legislation, policy and practice.
- Support Returning Officers and Electoral Registration Officers and their teams, to interpret and apply complex electoral requirements.
- Analyse performance information and identify opportunities for service improvement.
- Build and maintain productive relationships with electoral stakeholders across the region.
- Influence improvements in electoral administration through evidence-based advice and support.
- Identify, share and promote innovation and effective practice across the electoral community.
- Monitor emerging issues, risks and trends, maintaining accurate stakeholder and performance records.
- Contribute to wider Electoral Commission priorities and projects that strengthen electoral administration across England.

The English Regional Team works closely with local authorities and electoral professionals across England to support effective electoral registration and election delivery.
We are a collaborative, outward-facing team recognised across the sector for providing trusted advice, professional challenge and practical support. Our work helps drive continuous improvement and promotes consistency in electoral administration nationwide.

Who we’re looking for
We're seeking experienced professionals with strong stakeholder engagement and advisory skills who can build credibility quickly and influence positive outcomes.
You will bring:
- Experience providing professional advice on legislative, regulatory, governance or operational matters.
- Experience working with legislation, guidance or regulatory frameworks and supporting others to apply requirements effectively.
- Experience analysing performance information and identifying opportunities for improvement.
- Strong relationship-building and stakeholder management experience.
- Experience of delivering electoral services or working within a comparable regulatory, assurance, governance or public sector environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to interpret and communicate complex information clearly and accurately.
- Strong influencing, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
- A high degree of integrity, impartiality and professional judgement.

The Office & Ways of Working:
Whilst this is a home-based role, you'll be part of a highly collaborative and connected team. We use Microsoft Teams and other digital tools to stay closely connected, share knowledge and work together effectively across England. Regular team meetings, collaborative projects and stakeholder engagement activity ensure colleagues remain visible, supported and engaged, regardless of location.
Alongside remote working, you'll have opportunities to meet colleagues in person through team events, workshops, training and organisational meetings. This approach provides flexibility and autonomy while maintaining a strong team culture and sense of connection.
