We're looking for an Information Exchange and Interoperability Engineer (Grade 12) to join our Market Design team at Elexon.
In this role, you'll provide specialist technical expertise in communication protocols, information exchange standards and interoperability, helping to shape the technical frameworks that support the next generation of smart energy technologies.
Working as part of our Smart Secure Electricity Systems (SSES) programme, you'll focus on ensuring technologies such as electric vehicle smart chargers, smart heating systems and battery storage can communicate and operate effectively within the evolving electricity market.
This is an exciting opportunity to apply your technical expertise to a growing area of the energy sector, working with industry stakeholders, standards bodies and policymakers to support the UK's transition to a smarter, more flexible and sustainable energy system.
What you'll do:
Provide specialist technical expertise on communication protocols, information exchange standards and interoperability requirements for Energy Smart Appliances.
Review, maintain and support the development of technical and regulatory frameworks, including the Consumer Led Flexibility Companion Specification (CLFCS).
Review and assess technical proposals, designs and documentation, ensuring alignment with relevant standards and interoperability requirements.
Support the management of changes to technical specifications, including the introduction of new device standards and communication protocols.
Provide technical support for interoperability testing, helping to ensure smart energy technologies can communicate and operate effectively.
Work closely with internal teams, industry stakeholders, standards bodies and policymakers to provide technical advice and resolve complex queries.
Support technical and strategic decision-making, ensuring recommendations are evidence-based and aligned with industry requirements.
Identify, assess and communicate technical risks, issues and dependencies, recommending practical solutions.
Monitor developments in UK, European and international technical standards, helping to ensure SSES arrangements remain aligned with emerging technologies and industry requirements.
What you'll bring:
We're looking for someone with a strong technical background and expertise in information exchange standards, communication protocols and interoperability. You may come from the energy sector or another technical industry where these skills are relevant.
Expert technical knowledge and understanding of domestic and international information exchange standards.
Experience working with communication protocols, technical specifications or interoperability requirements.
The ability to interpret complex technical information, identify risks and develop practical solutions.
Experience providing technical advice and guidance to a range of stakeholders.
Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
The confidence to contribute to technical discussions, build consensus and influence decisions.
Strong analytical, research and problem-solving skills, with excellent attention to detail.
The ability to work collaboratively across teams and manage competing priorities.
A willingness to develop knowledge of electricity market arrangements, flexibility markets and emerging smart energy technologies.
Relevant academic qualifications and/or professional experience in a technical discipline.
It would also be beneficial if you have:
Experience working with smart energy technologies, including EV smart chargers, smart heating systems or battery energy storage.
Knowledge of the roles of energy technology manufacturers, flexibility service providers, Distribution System Operators (DSOs) and the National Energy System Operator (NESO).
Experience working with standards organisations such as BSI, IEC, ETSI or ISO.
Knowledge of electricity market arrangements, flexibility markets or related regulatory frameworks.
Experience supporting technical assurance, interoperability testing or the implementation of technical standards.
An understanding of emerging developments in smart energy technology and their impact on energy markets.
Experience using data processing or analysis tools.
