Chronic Pain Specialist Nurse

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a part-time Chronic Pain Nurse working 22.5 hours per week within the Chronic Pain team. You will need to have and demonstrate chronic pain experience , understanding the complexities and management of this group of patients.

You will also need to undertake audit, writing guidelines that are evidenced based and in line with National guidance and closely with the rest of the Team. The role includes working in a clinic based environment, reviewing patients with ongoing chronic pain. You will work autonomously within the service.

Main duties of the job The Pain Service works in collaboration with medical teams and patients experiencing chronic pain, developing their scope of professional practice and making autonomous decisions to meet the needs of the service.

The post holder provides specialist chronic pain education, training and information for patients, their carers, other health care professionals, and collaboratively assists in the development of the chronic pain service.

The post holder will assist in delivering this service to all Trust sites, outpatient clinics and into the community if required. The post holder will have their own chronic pain clinics and deliver holistic, evidence based chronic pain management under the supervision of the band 7 and the chronic pain consultants.

They will work collaboratively with all members of the team and be expected to participate in meeting the trusts objectives, quality standards and targets. They will work across 3 sites.

Key results from the job holder Planning and Organisational Duties Perform comprehensive assessment of patients chronic pain needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery in an outpatient setting.

Enables the delivery of a high standard, specialised chronic pain management provision to all Trust sites and outpatient clinics Manages and organises own caseload of patients within various settings using own initiative with the supportive of other members of the team.

Perform clinical skills in the outpatient environment providing assessment & treatment of chronic pain using guidelines to enhance the patient/carer experience. Collect, collate, evaluate and report information, maintaining accurate patient records in line with clinical governance and risk-management.

Involve patients and carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of care and development of the chronic pain service to enhance the patient/carer experience.

Communicate sensitive & complex information to patients/carers/relatives and professionals across primary and secondary care regarding treatment plans & care decisions throughout the patient journey.

Work collaboratively with other professionals and members of the multi disciplinary team to ensure patients pain needs are met, especially in relation to ongoing care needs.

Act as a role model in the delivery of care to patients Use leadership and team building skills to ensure high quality of care is provided to all chronic pain patients Demonstrates a sound research-based knowledge of chronic pain management therapies and conditions.

Undertake audit and evaluate service delivery and clinical effectiveness as required. Ensure compliance with research governance, locally and nationally. Help in the development of databases and use relevant software in audit to facilitate audit.

Maintain personal professional knowledge and understanding of current issues through commitment to self-development through life long learnings

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential Registered Nurse with current valid NMC registration Teaching and assessing ENB 998/730/Certificate of Mentorship or other accredited teaching certificate ENB N53 - Principles of effective pain management Level 23 or equivalent pain management course / experience Evidence of continuing professional development Experience Essential Experience of working with a pain management service Experience of teaching/assessing/ supervising others in a clinical setting Participation in service development and leading implementation of change.

Evidence of writing protocols/standards. Evidence of effective team working across professional and organisational boundaries. Skills Essential Ability to communicate potentially unpleasant/sensitive information to patients in a variety of settings.

Able to influence and overcome resistance through application of advanced communication skills. Able to analyse data and provide written reports. Able to manage work autonomously.

Able to perform assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care Able to perform clinical skills Ability to develop effective interpersonal relationship with colleagues across health and social care setting.
