Engineer Operations Supervisor

In the role of Engineer (Operations Supervisor) , you will have the opportunity to play a key role in that journey. What will your day look like?

The role offers variety, responsibility and the opportunity to make a real difference to the safety and resilience of the local highway network.

Your day will involve supporting operational teams, providing clear direction, resolving issues and ensuring that reactive and planned maintenance activities are completed safely, efficiently and to the required standards. You will spend time both in the office and out on site, monitoring performance, undertaking inspections and engaging with colleagues, contractors and stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of highway services.

A key part of the role is ensuring the safety of both the workforce and the travelling public. You will oversee traffic management arrangements, promote safe working practices and ensure compliance with legislation, policies and risk assessments. You will help maintain a positive safety culture and high standards of workmanship across all operations.

You will also play an important role in responding to highway incidents, emergencies and network issues, making informed decisions and deploying resources to help keep the highway network safe and operational.

During the winter season, you will be at the forefront of delivering the Council's Winter Service, helping to keep roads safe and accessible during periods of adverse weather. You will coordinate precautionary salting operations, supervise snow clearance activities and respond to changing weather conditions to ensure an effective and timely service. This role requires flexibility, including participation in an out-of-hours standby rota.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking an experienced, motivated and proactive individual who is passionate about maintaining a safe, reliable and resilient highway network for our communities. You will be a confident and capable individual, able to supervise operational teams, coordinate contractors and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment where priorities can change quickly.

The successful candidate will hold qualifications that reflect both technical knowledge and supervisory capability and be able to access a variety of operational sites safely and effectively at any time of day or night as part of their normal duties and on-call responsibilities. It is desirable that you hold a Street Works (NRSWA) qualification and possess a strong understanding of highway maintenance operations, health and safety legislation, traffic management requirements and industry best practice, together with a commitment to continuous professional development.

You will have experience of planning and coordinating highway maintenance activities, managing resources effectively and ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently and to a high standard. Equally comfortable working on site and in an office environment, you will be able to monitor performance, resolve operational issues and support the delivery of both planned and reactive maintenance programmes.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential. You will be able to build positive working relationships with colleagues, contractors, stakeholders and members of the public. You will be adaptable, organised and resilient, capable of managing competing priorities while maintaining a focus on safety, service delivery and operational excellence.
