Health and Safety Officer at Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council in Town Hall, Nuneaton

About the role

Job description

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is a small Council with big values. We are committed to ensuring our services are delivered to the highest possible standard and we put the customer at the forefront of everything we do. By working for us you will become part of the team and will play your part in serving our community.

We are looking for a Health and Safety Officer to join the Corporate Health and Safety Team within Environment and Enforcement. You will provide practical, credible advice to managers and employees across the Council and help make sure our workplaces, assets and operations are safe and compliant.

The role covers a wide variety of work. One day you may be auditing a depot or office building, and the next you may be supporting a manager with an accident investigation or delivering training to an operational team. You will work with managers, trade union representatives and colleagues at every level, and you will help shape how health and safety is managed across the organisation.

Main duties

Carry out planned health and safety audits/reviews, workplace inspections and site visits across Council workplaces, assets and activities, and produce clear reports with practical recommendations.

Support managers with accident and incident investigations and with risk assessments, including COSHH, DSEAR and health surveillance.

Help duty holders close actions and track progress against them.

Design, organise and deliver health and safety training and toolbox talks for staff at all levels.

Prepare reports on accident statistics, trends and occupational health and safety issues for Committees and officer groups.

Research and develop health and safety policies and procedures.

What we are looking for

Recent and relevant experience of giving advice on a range of health and safety issues.

Experience of designing and delivering effective health and safety training.

Experience of carrying out health and safety audits and of working on a variety of projects.

Experience of working in local government or a unionised environment.

The NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or a relevant equivalent, or a willingness to obtain it.

A qualification in training, or a willingness to obtain one.

A good working knowledge of current health and safety legislation and the ability to interpret and apply it.

Excellent communication and negotiating skills, with the confidence to challenge existing practice and find practical solutions.

The ability to manage your own workload, prioritise effectively and keep accurate records.

Good IT skills, including SharePoint and Microsoft Office.

A willingness and ability to travel to sites across the borough, with access to suitable transport.

Further details for the post are contained in the job description and person specification.

How to apply

Please complete the online application form, including details of your employment history, qualifications and experience. You should also upload a covering letter explaining how you meet the criteria in the person specification.

As an employer, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council offers a wide range of benefits, including flexible working, the Local Government Pension Scheme, a generous holiday allowance and payment of one professional membership fee.

This post is covered by the Fluency Duty, as outlined in the Code of Practice on the English language requirements for public sector workers.

Interviews are planned for Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th October 2026.
