ABOUT US

The Students’ Union at Essex is on a mission to become the world’s most student-centred organisation.

It sounds bold, and it is. But we believe that every single one of our 13,000 members deserve nothing less. We’re dedicated to help students have the best experience possible at the University of Essex.

And we’re pretty good at it too. Students ranked us as 7th best Students’ Union in the country in the annual Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2024, the 6th year in a row we’ve been voted in the top 10.

And we need more brilliant people who share our ambition, to join in and help us create the next, most exciting part of our journey.

OUR VALUES

At Essex SU, we’re not like other Students’ Unions and we don’t want to be. We’re proud of our values (we call them our tattoos), which guide the way we work:

  • Powered by students – everything we do comes from our members
  • Shoulder to shoulder – 13,000+ students and staff, standing together
  • No bullshit – we promise to tell it like it is, no spin and no red tape
  • Work hard, play hard – because life’s about both
  • Always challenge – the Essex spirit is in our DNA and we’ll fight to uphold it

WHAT YOU’LL DO

The Student Engagement department is on a mission to listen and respond to members needs and create opportunities for members to get involved with creating new activities and events, ensuring that we truly benefit everyone studying at East 15 Loughton, regardless of age, gender, nationality, religion, sexuality or anything else.

Our students deserve an incredible student experience more than ever before and we are here to ensure that.

You will play a key role in developing the student experience for our members and communities at East 15 Loughton. Working closely with the East 15 President, you’ll support and help deliver SU events of various sizes, ensuring they reflect the needs and interests of the student body.

You will be responsible for understanding the needs of different communities, working with them to find solutions to issues they raise, and delivering campaigns and events that respond to those needs. A big part of your role will involve creating engaging content to raise awareness of the Students’ Union at East 15 Loughton, including SU events and Just Play sessions. You'll help drive traffic to the SU website, grow communities, and build member trust.

We’re looking for someone with a creative eye who is confident both in front of and behind the camera, with the ability to direct, film, and edit content. You may also be asked to caption social media posts and support with writing blogs or email copy.

Every shift will look different, but as an example you might:

  • Assist with the delivery of SU and departmental events as well attend Just Play session
  • Support projects and events tailored to specific student communities (e.g., LGBTQ+, mature, part-time, postgraduates)
  • Speak with students across campus to understand their needs and help shape SU services
  • Create engaging content for social media, including Instagram Stories, TikToks/Reels, and promotional videos
  • Be confident filming, directing, and editing content, including student interviews and event highlights
  • Contribute to blog posts, website updates, and email communications
  • Stay up to date with trends and student interests to ensure relevant and engaging content
  • Collect feedback at events and support reflection to improve future activities
