• About the opportunities

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is seeking to appoint three exceptional senior leaders to the posts of Sector Director – Acute Services. These are significant leadership roles within Scotland’s largest NHS Board, offering the opportunity to shape, lead and deliver high-quality, safe, effective and sustainable acute services for a diverse population of around 1.2 million people, as well as regional and national services for patients across the wider West of Scotland and beyond.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer/Deputy Chief Executive, each Director will provide visible, values-based and strategic leadership across one of the Acute Sectors. The posts carry responsibility for leading complex clinical services, managing significant resources, strengthening performance and governance, and delivering transformational change in line with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s priorities for reform, improvement and person-centred care.

The role

As Sector Director – Acute Services, you will be accountable for the leadership, management and delivery of a broad portfolio of medical, surgical and older people’s services, ensuring a clear focus on quality, safety, performance, workforce, culture and financial sustainability. You will work as part of the Acute Services management team and as a full member of the Board’s Senior Management Team, contributing to corporate objectives and ensuring effective cross-service coherence across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

You will lead your Sector through a substantial programme of service transformation, supporting the delivery of the Board’s Transforming Together framework and sustainable blueprint for health and care. This will include strengthening around-the-clock services, improving patient experience, developing new models of care, enhancing clinical and staff governance, and working closely with Health and Social Care Partnerships and wider strategic partners to deliver integrated, effective and responsive services for local communities.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic and operational leadership for high-quality, person-centred, safe and effective acute services across the Sector.
• Lead the planning and delivery of transformational service change, ensuring alignment with local, regional and national priorities.
• Deliver performance against national and local access standards, including waiting times, waiting lists, cancer standards and urgent and unscheduled care requirements.
• Ensure robust clinical, staff, financial and corporate governance arrangements are in place, with clear systems for scrutiny, assurance and risk management.
• Develop and manage the Sector budget, ensuring effective stewardship of resources and delivery of financial improvement plans.
• Lead and support a positive, inclusive and values-based culture, with a strong focus on workforce planning, staff wellbeing, resilience and leadership development.
• Work collaboratively with clinical leaders, Corporate Directors, other Acute Directors, Health and Social Care Partnerships, local authorities, staff-side colleagues and national partners.
• Promote innovation, improvement and service redesign across traditional organisational and professional boundaries to improve outcomes for patients and communities.About you

We are looking for senior leaders with a demonstrable track record of success in a large, complex organisation, ideally within health, social care, local government or another major public-facing service environment. You will bring substantial experience of strategic leadership, operational delivery, performance improvement, service transformation and the direct management and development of senior teams.

You will be politically astute, highly credible and confident operating at Board and system level, with the ability to influence, negotiate and build trusted relationships across a wide range of stakeholders. You will also be able to demonstrate visible, compassionate and values-led leadership, with a commitment to inclusion, partnership working, quality improvement and the delivery of safe, sustainable services.
