Managing Employee Burnout from Excessive Meetings

Virginia Sullivan · 6d ago

My team has had enough of the sheer number of meetings we have to attend, which is affecting their productivity and overall well-being. We have recently implemented a new project management tool, which I thought would help streamline our workflow, but it seems to have increased the number of meetings instead. As an employer, I do not want to see my employees burn out, so I am wondering how we can strike a balance between having necessary meetings and giving our team members enough time to focus on their work. How can we identify and eliminate unnecessary meetings without impacting our team's collaboration and communication?

I've found that setting a 'no meeting day' once a week really helps my team recharge, we've been doing this for a few months now and productivity has actually increased. We use a shared calendar to schedule meetings and I've also encouraged team members to block out time for focused work, which helps them avoid getting pulled into unnecessary meetings. Our team of 10 has been using this approach and we've seen a significant reduction in meeting invites, with some team members even reporting they have an extra hour or two free each day to get on with their work.

I tried introducing a no-meeting day once a week, but it didn't quite work out as planned, since people just ended up scheduling even more meetings on the other days. We also saw a surge in emails and instant messages on those no-meeting days, which kind of defeated the purpose.
