Managing Mental Health Support in the Workplace

Lily Baker · 8 Aug 2026

We have seen a significant increase in employees taking time off for mental health reasons, which I am worried do not get the support they need when they return to work. I've noticed that our current employee assistance program is not being utilized as much as we had hoped, and I am concerned that we do not have the right resources in place to support our staff. As someone who has struggled with mental health issues myself, I want to make sure we are doing everything we can to support our team, so I was wondering what other companies are doing to provide mental health support and encourage employees to take advantage of these resources. Do you have any suggestions on how we can improve our mental health support and reduce the stigma around discussing mental health in the workplace?

I've been thinking about this a lot since I took on my new role, and one thing that's worried me is how we're going to handle confidentiality, because if people don't trust that their mental health issues will be kept private, they won't use the support we offer. We've had issues with our HR system being a bit clunky, so I'm not sure it's the best way to store sensitive info, and I've been looking into alternatives like EmployeeCentral from SAP. Maybe we could also consider training our line managers to be more aware of the issues, I've seen some good courses on this from Mind.

Having been through a few restructuring processes myself, I can admit that we dropped the ball on mental health support after our last restructure, and it took us a while to realize that our employee assistance program was not as effective as we thought, we're now looking into implementing a new system with access to private therapy sessions for all staff.
