Managing Return to Office Expectations

Ashton Harvey 路 8 Aug 2026

It is proving hard to weigh the needs of our team against the recent trend of big tech companies like Google and Amazon mandating a return to office for their employees, we have seen a surge in similar requests from our own management. As someone who has been working remotely for the past two years, I do not want to give up the flexibility that comes with it, but at the same time, I understand the benefits of face-to-face interactions. We have a lot of new hires who are eager to meet their colleagues in person, but our office space is limited, so we need to find a solution that works for everyone. How can we implement a return to office policy that meets the needs of both our employees and the company, without causing too much disruption?

Honestly I think we're overthinking this, a flexible hybrid model with set days for face-to-face interactions should work, we've seen it succeed at companies like Microsoft with their 50% remote policy.

Another perspective for you. Honestly I think we're getting ahead of ourselves here, we cannot just follow what the big tech companies are doing without considering our own unique setup. I've seen it work well at places like Microsoft where they've implemented a hybrid model that works for them, but we have to think about what works best for our team and our clients, not just blindly follow the trend.

I've found that setting clear goals and objectives for each team member, then having regular check-ins on Slack or a quick call, really helps to keep everyone on track whether they're in the office or working from home, we use Trello to track progress and it's been a lifesaver.

Been mulling this over. Honestly I think we've been here before, I made the mistake of bringing everyone back to the office full time after lockdown and it was a disaster, productivity plummeted and we lost a few good people who couldn't handle the commute. We've since adopted a flexible approach, using tools like Slack and Trello to stay connected, and it's worked out much better for us. I'm now considering a trial of a four-day office week to see if that gives us the best of both worlds, so I'd be interested to hear how others are approaching this.

I learned the hard way that forcing a return to office policy can backfire, we tried it 6 months ago and saw a 25% drop in productivity, now we're using Trello to track employee preferences and find a compromise. Our team of 50 people has been using this approach for 3 months and so far it's helped us find a balance that works for everyone, with around 80% of staff opting for a hybrid model.
