Balancing AI Adoption with Employee Job Security

Jonah Udo 路 31 Jul 2026

Investment in AI technology here has been heavy, all of it meant to improve our data analysis capabilities, but I am starting to get concerned about the impact on our staff, as some roles may become redundant. I've seen this happen in other companies, where employees were let go due to automation, and we do not want that to happen here. As someone who oversees both the tech and HR sides of the business, I am struggling to find a balance between adopting AI and ensuring our employees feel secure in their jobs. How do we implement AI in a way that complements our workforce, rather than replacing it?

I overspent on implementing SAP's AI-powered analytics tool, which automated about 20% of our data entry tasks, and unfortunately, we had to let 5 people go as a result, which was a tough lesson to learn. Now I'm working on retraining our staff to use tools like Tableau to focus on higher-level analysis and decision-making, which I hope will prevent similar situations in the future.

I've tried using tools like Workday to assess which roles are most at risk of becoming automated, but we found that it didn't give us a clear enough picture to make informed decisions, and after 6 months of trying to implement it, we decided to scrap the project. We're now looking into using a combination of Tableau and Python scripts to get a better understanding of our workflow and identify areas where AI can augment our staff's capabilities, rather than replace them.

I've seen similar concerns arise in our own company when we introduced automated reporting tools, which actually helped our staff focus on higher-value tasks. What's worked for us is upskilling our employees in areas like data interpretation and strategic decision-making, so they can work alongside AI systems like Tableau and Power BI.

I tried retraining staff to work alongside our new AI system but we saw a significant drop in productivity as they struggled to adapt to the changed workflow.
