The Cloud Cost Chaos

Molly Liu · 29 Jul 2026

I am currently dealing with a major headache as our company's cloud costs have skyrocketed over the past quarter, and we cannot seem to pinpoint the exact reason. We have recently implemented a new data analytics platform, and our usage has increased significantly, but the bills we're getting from AWS are much higher than expected. I do not understand why our cost estimates were so off, and I'm worried that we'll have to make some tough decisions about which projects to cut back on. How do other companies handle unexpected cloud cost spikes, and what strategies can we use to get our expenses back under control?

Mate I hear you on the layoffs thing. We went through it last year. Took about four months before the remaining team started cracking.

Given that you've recently implemented a new data analytics platform, I think we should consider the potential impact of data egress costs, which can add up quickly, especially if you're transferring large amounts of data out of AWS. We've had issues with this in the past when using tools like Apache Spark, where a single job can rack up over 10,000 pounds in egress fees if not properly optimized.
