Skilled Worker visa squeeze leaves hiring managers stuck

Amy Palmer · 5d ago

As an employer, I've watched candidates accept UK roles, then lose patience while the £38,700 salary threshold and sponsor paperwork push start dates past the quarter. Managers keep saying the offer will lapse, while HR gets blamed for slowing down a process that's partly outside our control. How are UK employers handling candidate drop-off when visa costs and approval timing wreck an otherwise solid hire?

We've set up a provisional six month contract at the threshold salary and let them start remotely while the visa clears.

I front the £3k visa fee, deduct it from their first paycheck and they stop dropping out.

If you let them start work before the visa’s approved you could breach right‑to‑work rules and risk losing your sponsor licence.
