Fingerprint clock-ins at UK offices sparking GDPR complaints among shift workers

Aaliyah Fraser · 13 Sep 2026

Several Midlands logistics sites are tying clock-ins to fingerprint scanners, and shift workers are saying biometric data gets stored on local servers with no proper data protection impact assessment. We've raised concerns about who actually has access, and HR keeps replying with template policies that don't address the specifics. If your employer's rolling out biometric time-tracking without consulting staff reps, what's been your move to push back?

I ran into similar issues when our site trialled facial recognition last year and ended up using a GDPR compliance checklist from the ICO's employment practices guidance to challenge HR's rollout plan. Did you manage to get a copy of the DPIA they claim to have done, or are they still refusing to share it with union reps?

We tried getting the payroll vendor to push back for us, and it flopped. They said the scanner sat outside payroll, HR blamed facilities, and we realised a polite supplier email just gave everyone somewhere to hide.
