AI-generated performance reviews sparking distrust in quarterly appraisals

Tobi Davidson · 12 Sep 2026

At Meridian Group, the shift to AI-generated feedback during quarterly reviews has led to employees questioning the validity of their evaluations, with three teams outright refusing to accept scores they deem inaccurate. Managers are caught between enforcing the system and addressing concerns about bias in algorithms they weren’t trained to audit, while HR insists the tech reduces workload. How are others balancing efficiency gains from AI with maintaining team morale and trust in the review process?

I should say I rushed this through without checking how our algorithm actually handles edge cases across teams, and that's why people are pushing back so hard right now. I thought I could just let the tech speak for itself, but clearly the lack of human oversight made things worse. The feedback score drops might look nice on a dashboard, but when actual staff feel blindsided by automated judgments, trust doesn't come close even if metrics improve.
