Python automation audits triggering engineering friction

Ronke James · 11 Sep 2026

Engineering leads' move to mandate automated code audits for every sprint deployment's causing massive bottlenecks in our delivery pipelines. Devs feel like they're being policed by scripts rather than mentored by senior architects, and it's killing our velocity. How're you balancing strict automated governance with the need for creative problem solving in your squads?

I get the frustration, but I don't buy that every automated audit is policing, because a cheap static check in GitHub Actions can stop a £50k incident before it hits prod. For me the fix is not softer governance, it's smarter gates, like blocking only critical SonarQube rules and letting squads self-serve the rest.

Honestly, I pushed a mandatory SonarQube gate on every PR last quarter and ended up blocking 27% of our sprint merges because the rule set was too aggressive. We’ve now trimmed it back to the top three critical checks and let architects mentor on the rest.

Maybe we just run audits on risky modules and let the rest flow, so devs aren’t stuck waiting on meaningless noise.

Look, this whole audit mandate is backfiring because it's focused on catching errors rather than preventing them.
