Ops pressure from new profit guarantee rules

Gabrielle Malik · 1 Sep 2026

Cash flow gaps are hitting us hardest in the third quarter as we can't meet revised KPI thresholds. How can senior leadership balance the tightening capital allocation mandates with the urgent need to retain key staff during restructuring? Do colleagues have strategies to align departmental budgets without triggering internal resistance?

I feel you, we hit the same squeeze last Q3 and had to freeze non essential spend while fast tracking a 12 week talent retention sprint. Using Anaplan we built a rolling forecast that flagged a £500k cash gap two weeks early, giving us room to reallocate headcount without a big pushback.

Honestly we tried cutting overtime hours to save cash but it just burned out the team and turnover spiked. The dip showed up in our weekly meetings and we weren't seeing any improvement. We ended up reallocating a small slice of the £5k budget to a pilot training program run through Xero which actually lifted morale without breaking the cap.

We shifted to a transparent budget allocation model where teams could see exactly how their headcount dollars were being spent across projects - it reduced the "why didn't we get X" questions that were killing morale. The key was letting people reallocate 10 percent of their own budget quarterly rather than having it dictated top-down, which kept some control in their hands even while we were trimming elsewhere.

One thing we tried was setting up a rolling cash‑flow forecast in Power BI so each team could see the impact of their spend in real time. It let us shift discretionary spend to the projects with the highest near‑term return and kept finance from having to chase last‑minute approvals. Do you have any visibility into which of your upcoming initiatives could be delayed a month without hurting your KPI targets?
