Data Security Scare on AWS

Phoebe Chukwu · 14h ago

Amazon's recent outage has left us reeling, and I'm still trying to get my head around the data security implications, especially since we've just migrated our entire database to AWS. Our team's been working around the clock to ensure we're compliant with the latest GDPR regulations, but I'm worried we can't keep up with the evolving threat landscape. What strategies are other tech teams using to bolster their data security on AWS, and how can we balance security with the need for rapid innovation and deployment? We're struggling to find the right balance, and it's causing a lot of tension between our security and development teams.

Honestly we messed up our AWS config last year and it took a surprise penetration test from a third party to expose the weaknesses.

Generally I think we're overreacting to the AWS outage, our own systems have been pretty stable since we switched to using CloudCheckr for monitoring. We've also been looking at using a tool like Dome9 to automate our compliance checks, which should help take some pressure off our team.

Frankly we're more concerned about insider threats than external hacks so we're focusing on tightening up access controls with tools like Okta.
