Google Cloud Costs Spiralling Out of Control

Yemi Lim · 3d ago

Tuesday's budget review meeting was a real eye-opener, as we're facing a 30% increase in Google Cloud costs over the past quarter, and it's not like we've upgraded our services that much. We've tried to optimize our usage, but it seems like every time we think we've got a handle on it, they've changed something and we're back to square one. I've spoken to our finance team and they're getting anxious about meeting our Q3 targets, so I'm wondering, how are other tech teams managing to keep their Google Cloud costs under control without compromising on service quality?

I've been in your shoes before, having made the mistake of not regularly reviewing our Google Cloud costs, which ended up costing us around 25k extra last year. We've since started using ParkMyCloud to help optimize our usage and set up alerts for any unexpected spikes, which has saved us a significant amount of money.

I've seen this issue pop up with a few of my clients who use Google Cloud, and it's often down to poor tagging and lack of automation. We've had some success with tools like ParkMyCloud to help optimize usage and reserve instances, which has saved one of my clients around 25% on their cloud costs.
