Fleetcare manages and maintains a diverse fleet that supports communities across Staffordshire, including road sweepers, gritters, cars, library vans, plant, light commercial vehicles and passenger transport. We also provide maintenance services to a growing range of external public sector and private sector customers.

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Heavy Vehicle Mechanic to join our professional workshop team. You will carry out a wide variety of servicing, inspections, diagnostics, repairs and maintenance across a diverse fleet of heavy and light vehicles, plant and equipment. Main Responsibilities You will be:

Carrying out major repairs, servicing, inspections and preventative maintenance across a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment, including HGVs, cars, vans, specialist municipal vehicles, highways equipment and contractors' plant. This will include fault diagnosis, advanced diagnostic testing and MOT testing to ensure vehicles remain safe, compliant and operational.

Preparing vehicles and equipment to the highest standard for annual MOT, plating and statutory inspections, including presenting vehicles at authorised test facilities and resolving any defects identified during the testing process.

Diagnosing, maintaining and repairing a wide range of vehicle systems, including electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical components, together with tail lifts, ancillary equipment, air conditioning systems and specialist fleet assets.

Supporting Staffordshire County Council's Winter Maintenance Service through participation in the Snowflake operation, ensuring gritting vehicles and associated equipment remain available during severe weather events. This includes taking part in the winter maintenance "Stand To" rota and contributing to the delivery of a 24 hour vehicle breakdown and emergency response service for key council operations and customers.

Maintaining accurate service, inspection and repair records, ensuring all work is completed in accordance with legislative requirements, industry best practice and Fleetcare quality standards.

Working closely with colleagues and customers to help keep essential frontline services operating safely and efficiently across Staffordshire.

The Ideal Candidate

The minimum criteria that will be used to shortlist for this role will be,

A recognised Level 3 NVQ in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, Heavy Vehicle Maintenance, or an equivalent qualification, together with practical experience gained within a commercial vehicle, fleet or workshop environment.

A full driving licence with a minimum Category C entitlement. Additional licence categories would be advantageous but are not essential.

A commitment to continuous professional development, including holding, or being willing to work towards, a Level 3 qualification in Electric and Hybrid Vehicle System Repair as we continue to modernise and diversify our fleet.

Strong technical knowledge and hands on experience across all aspects of commercial vehicle maintenance and repair, including diagnostics, MOT preparation, fault finding, engine and drivetrain repairs, chassis systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical systems and plant equipment.

The ability to work independently and as part of a team to deliver high-quality workmanship in accordance with manufacturer specifications, DVSA roadworthiness standards, health and safety requirements and agreed service standards.

Other criteria that will be assessed throughout the recruitment process will be:

A proactive approach to problem solving, with the ability to diagnose faults efficiently and help minimise vehicle downtime for essential frontline services.

A commitment to delivering excellent customer service and building positive working relationships with colleagues, customers and stakeholders.

The flexibility to respond to operational demands, including participation in emergency response, winter maintenance and out of hours breakdown support when required.

A desire to continually develop your knowledge and skills, embracing new technologies and innovations within the automotive and transport sector.
