2-year Fixed Term Contract available immediately

Total package value up to £79k per annum depending on experience and qualifications. The package is inclusive of International Supplement based on family status, Relocation costs and Pension contribution.

This post will be up to 30 hours a week pro-rate

Offering unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of the opening of our international airport in 2017, we are not yet at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid.

Are you an experienced statistician with a background in health and resource-limited environments, ideally with experience in digital transformation? In this exciting role you will offer strategic direction and scientific leadership in advanced statistical and epidemiological methods in public health.

You will provide senior statistical and methodological leadership across the preventative health team. You will advise on study design, analysis and interpretation, challenge assumptions where needed, and help ensure that evaluations are robust, practical and appropriate for St Helena.

A key part of the role will be strengthening local capability. You will mentor the health data team, support the development of quantitative and analytical skills, and help establish reliable approaches to evaluation and data quality. You may also contribute to succession planning.

You will lead the evaluation of preventative health initiatives, including studies delivered in remote and real-world settings. This will include addressing practical issues such as recruitment, retention, adherence, outcome measurement, missing data and uncertainty.

You should hold a PhD in statistics, epidemiology or a closely related quantitative discipline, with strong expertise in applied medical statistics. You will need substantial experience of designing, analysing and interpreting health or public health studies, and of working with complex healthcare datasets.

Experience of evaluating public health or behavioural interventions is important, together with a strong understanding of bias, confounding and other common sources of uncertainty in observational and real-world data.

You should also have sound knowledge of data governance, research ethics and the management of sensitive health data. Experience of assuring the quality and integrity of complex datasets is essential.

You must be able to explain complex statistical issues clearly to non-specialist audiences. As mentoring is an important part of the role, experience in teaching, supervision or staff development is also required. Experience with REDCap or a similar research data platform would be an advantage.

As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme, you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace, contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.

Annual Pension Contribution of 7.5% of the basic aggregate salary

Employees and accompanying dependant/s will be entitled to medical and dental treatment under the SHG Public Health Scheme at the rate applied to resident St Helenians.

Free schooling for dependent children from 3 to 16 years

Annual Leave of 30 days per annum (with an additional 9 days of public holidays).
