- Power Industry Maintenance Operative Salary: £73,865 Grade: P4G1 Location: Greenwich Power Station Contract Type : Permanent Closing date for applications : Friday 4th September 2026 @23:59 Overview of project/role BE THE POWER BEHIND THE TUBE London Underground has the largest private electrical distribution network in the country which requires multi-disciplined technical staff to maintain the infrastructure. We are looking for someone with experience in the field of power station maintenance to join our team as a Shift Fitter. Shift Fitter's are responsible for carrying out daily operational and maintenance duties in a safe and efficient manner to ensure the availability of Greenwich Generating Station, which consists of seven Open Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGT) with a combined output of 103MW. The Station provides London Undergrounds Central Emergency Power Supply (CEPS) as part of the Safety Certificate and Safety Authorisation for operating the railway. In addition, generation is provided commercially under contract with national grid to reduce London Undergrounds overall demand at times of stress on the grid, through Operating Reserve and Capacity Market contracts. The Greenwich Shift Fitter is accountable for supporting the Greenwich Shift Engineer through the delivery of routine maintenance activities and the safe operation of the Generating Stations. The Greenwich Shift Fitter reports into both the Greenwich Shift Engineer and the Greenwich Day Manager. The role requires the manning of the station on a 24/7, 365 day basis as part of a team consisting of 5 Greenwich Shift Engineers and 5 Greenwich Shift Fitters, working a 5 cycle shift pattern based on 12 hour shifts days/nights. There is also a Relief Shift Position to provide cover of the other 5 Greenwich Shift Fitters for annual leave, training or sickness cover. Accountabilities
Knowledge, understanding and compliance with London Underground and site-specific Health Safety Environmental and Quality policies and procedures.
Conduct Health and Safety audits/inspections Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Generation Station Assets Working to a safe system of work including carrying out safe isolations of the generation assets and the acceptance of High Voltage and Mechanical and Electrical (Non-HV) permit to work/safety documentation Maintenance of the assets both planned and reactive to ensure continued availability.
Including fault diagnostics and rectification across all three disciplines (electrical, Control and Instrumentation and mechanical).
Induction and supervision of external contract staff Skills Good communication skills – Essential Enjoy working as part of a team – Essential IT literate, able to produce and record date and information – Essential Calm, resilient, enthusiastic and resourceful – Essential Knowledge Time served apprenticeship in Electrical, Control and Instrumentation or Mechanical Engineering, with a minimum qualification level of a City & Guilds or preferably an Ordinary National Certificate (ONC) – Essential Extensive Power station or electrical supply industry knowledge from a maintenance perspective – Essential Knowledge of safe systems of work/safety rules - Essential High voltage experience – Holder of a London Underground HV1 or HV2 licence – Desirable Hold IOSH Managing Safely Certificate – Desirable Hold PASMA and IPAF licence – Desirable Hold Fork lift truck drivers licence – Desirable Hold Fire Watchman/Warden licence - Desirable Hold Safe Slinging/Rigging/Lifting certificate - Desirable Confined Space entry certificate - Desirable Experience Previous experience in a power station environment (ideally gas fired power generation but not essential) or from the electrical supply industry sector – Essential Experience of maintenance of rotating generation plant (gas or steam turbines), generators and ancillary plant/equipment – Essential Experience of carrying out planned and reactive maintenance on Electrical, Control and Instrumentation and Mechanical plant/equipment and systems – Essential Proven experience of high voltage switching operations and circuit isolation and earthing – Essential Experience of application of safe systems of work/safety rules including carrying out isolations and issue/acceptance of safety documentation (e.g. permit to work) – Essential Equality, diversity and inclusion We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and aim to reflect the diverse communities we serve.
