Are you organised, accurate and compassionate, with strong IT skills and an interest in how digital tools and artificial intelligence can help improve public services? If so, our Trainee Registration Officer role could be the start of a rewarding career where you support people at some of the most important moments in their lives, whilst also helping to modernise a traditional service for the future.

The Registration Service supports the registration of births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships, issues certificates in line with national legal requirements, assists with ceremonies, collects fees and helps deliver services such as Tell Us Once. It is meaningful, varied work, and every contact with a customer needs professionalism, empathy and attention to detail.

Alongside learning civil registration, you will also be part of a forward-looking service that is embracing AI and automation to make processes simpler, quicker and more accurate. One day each week will be dedicated to off-the-job learning with Barnsley College, leading to a Level 4 qualification in Artificial Intelligence and Automation. You will be encouraged to bring fresh ideas, spot opportunities for improvement and use digital systems safely, responsibly and effectively.

This is a 21-month fixed-term training opportunity, with the possibility of moving into a permanent Registration Officer role following successful completion of the apprenticeship. The role is based at Civic Centre 1, Market Street, Huddersfield, with occasional work from other sites including Dewsbury Town Hall. The working pattern is Monday to Saturday, with a day off during the week.

You do not need previous registration experience, as full training will be provided. What matters is that you have GCSE Maths and English at level 4 or above, strong literacy, numeracy and IT skills, excellent communication and time management skills, and the resilience to work in an emotional, demanding and highly statutory environment. You will need to be organised, flexible, respectful and committed to studying over an extended period to gain your qualification. If you are ready to learn, grow and help shape a modern Registration Service for the future, we would love to hear from you.
