Job summary

The opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist to join the Integrated Pain Management Service (IPMS).

The successful applicant will assist in providing specialist pain management within a multidisciplinary team, and managing patients with acute and chronic pain conditions to ensure that patients receive the highest standard of care.

Will accept applicants who want full or part time hours The IPMS is a busy and friendly multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals based in the West Suffolk Hospital and the Community, providing interventional, pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies to assist patients with pain management.

Main duties of the job The key elements of the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role are to assist in the provision of quality pain management across the Trust through comprehensive clinical, educational, audit and research initiatives.

Under supervision of senior CNS' the successful candidate will manage a case load of patients receiving direct referrals from consultant staff, junior medical staff, nursing staff and other allied health professionals (AHP's).

Excellent organisational skills are essential with the ability to plan, organise, prioritise and co-ordinate work under pressure when working alone or in collaboration with others.

As a member of the team you will provide education and information for patients and/or their carers in the management of acute and chronic pain, promoting their understanding and the ability to evolve strategies for self management.

You will participate in the delivery of clinical education sessions to all members of the multi-professional team to promote effective use of pain standards, policies, protocols, guidelines and clinical equipment.

Essential oCurrent NMC Registration Level 1 oEducated to degree level/working towards. ENB 998/equivalent. Desirable oPain management course/module. oManagement qualification and Immediate life support course.

Experience and knowledge Essential oPost registration experience. oExperience of post operative pain management systems including epidurals. oMulti-professional working. oProven professional development and its relevant application to pain management oDevelopment and evaluation of evidence based practice. oKnowledge of change management.

Desirable oLeadership and management oDelivery of educational programmes within clinical practice. oStandard setting and clinical audit. oRisk management. oExperience within critical care, recovery, or major surgical acute ward within an NHS environment.

Skills and abilities Essential oExcellent organisational skills. oAbility to manage a clinical caseload with minimal supervision oExpert written, verbal, communication and presentation skills. oAbility to record and deal with accurate facts, figures and information. oAbility to deliver Trust wide training and education programmes. oAbility to assess, diagnose, recommend and evaluate appropriate treatment for acute and chronic pain. o Ability to use complex clinical equipment.
